Old Hickory comin’ Haul out the hounds Like them banana trees Wanna cut old Billy down Billy Bowlegs Billy Bowlegs Been here forever Ain’t gonna leave Home of his grandfathers Billy was a chief Billy Bowlegs Alligator chief Billy Bowlegs In Cuscowilla Billy had a dream Was a gray cloud comin’ Like you’ve never seen Billy Bowlegs What does all this mean? Come down from Washington Roll up their sleeves Chop down your forests Like some disease Billy Bowlegs “They’ll have to get through me” Billy Bowlegs Billy Bowlegs Fight like a panther With tooth and claw “I will dead before I’m hauled to Arkansas” Say Billy Bowlegs “And that’s a long ways off” Go tell the others Go tell your wives Go stir the black drink Sharpen your knives “This is war, this is war” Ol’ Billy cried Billy Bowlegs “Gonna be a fight” There’s a boat on fire Coming up the way Smoke spilling out Cyprus trees aflame And that sky is glowing red As Georgia clay And the fireboat has come For Billy Bowlegs

Red River 03:20
Red Red river Forever gonna flow Old as time Deeper than you know Red Red river Forever gonna flow Clouds may burst Bring forth a bitter rain Earth may shake Off the dust again But this red Red river still remains Red Red river still remains Sun will shine Nations rise and fall As the sun will shine Nations rise and fall Red Red river A witness to it all Red Red river Forever gonna flow Old as time Deeper than you know Red Red river Forever gonna flow Red river Forever gonna flow Forever gonna flow

about

The album Walking in the Green Corn was inspired by Native American traditions and my own Muskogee Creek familial and tribal connection. Most of the songs were written on the cusp of 2011 and 2012. The subject matter remained so personally compelling, however, that I continued to fixate on this theme, even as the album was in production and well after it was released.

“Red River,” a meditation on indigenous vitality, was one such song. I recorded two versions of the song in 2012 – one on guitar and the other on six-string banjo, the latter which I’ve elected to unveil as we mark the tenth-anniversary of the album.

“Billy Bowlegs,” an ode to the brave and defiant Seminole Chief, was written in early 2014, soon after I moved to Tennessee. This song and “Red River” represent companion pieces to the album, Walking in the Green Corn. It’s gratifying to finally share both of these songs after all these years.
